📍 Location: this tour takes place in the Val d'Elsa, Tuscany, Italy — roughly one hour by road south-west of Florence, on the border with the province of Siena. San Gimignano is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Italy. Of the dozens of stone tower-houses built by rival families in the 12th and 13th centuries, fourteen still rise above the walls — the reason the town is often called the Manhattan of the Middle Ages. Inside the walls, the two linked squares of Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo lead to the Collegiata and to Palazzo Comunale with the Torre Grossa, the tallest of the towers. The hills around it produce Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG, the white wine that in 1966 was the first Italian wine ever awarded a DOC, and the town is also known for its saffron. Certaldo is divided into a modern lower town and Certaldo Alto, the medieval brick-built walled town on the hilltop — home of the writer Giovanni Boccaccio and of Palazzo Pretorio, linked to the lower town by a short funicular.
