Here comes a new episode of trekking in Tuscany. This time, from Florence we visit Monte Ferrato.
For this trip you must have a car or be able to move with public transportation.

We took a car and drove to Prato and from here we carried on till Parco Galceti. At the feet of Monte Ferrato.

Once you arrive here, you have the park on your right “Parco di Galceti” and a great bar for coffee on your left.

There’s a narrow street for cars right in front of the bar. Take it till a closed gate of a monastery and a research lab and go right circumnavigating the building.
After that enter the woods and the path that leads you to the Parco and from here onward the path is super nicely marked.
Impossible to make mistakes.
I have to tell you that it won’t be easy, in 3km you will climb for roughly 400 meters elevation.
It’s tough and you have to estimate a good 1 hour trek for doing just 3 km.
You are climbing Monte Ferrato, they called it a mountain but it’s peak is at just 500 mt.

What I found incredible it’s that this mountain is alive. There are locals that are running up and down that are enjoying walking to the top.
It’s a great sign that locals take care of their mountains and their environment.
In fact when you reach the summit you find 2 incredible and little refugios for barbecues or fire place. Here you find always someone to chat and a warm place to rest from the effort you put on climbing.
From here you can follow CAI path number 12 to the other 2 summits.
While you are walking from Monte Ferrato to the other summits you are walking on the edge of both sides of the mountains and the views are incredible.
You will walk through old Green Marble Quarries.
Here It’s where the green marble was collected to build Cathedrals everywhere around Tuscany. The famous San Miniato al Monte church above piazzale michelangelo was built with this marble. https://www.sanminiatoalmonte.it/
The scenery is incredible and totally unexpected from the mountains nearby.
Green marble quarries, dead trees, isolated trees here and there and many rare species of animals native of the natural reserve.

This is the trek we took, but please pay attention. The last 4 km more or less we did exploring the area and we didn’t follow any signed path.
Don’t follow it it’ s dangerous if you are not expert.
The signed paths are everywhere and easy to follow.
The long ring starting from the bottom where the park of Galceti is located to the 3 summits and back is around 7 km and it’s the one to follow.
I recommend you to take couple of beers to celebrate in one of the summits. The first one it’s for sure very busy, the other 2 are more wild but you plenty of spots to rest.
It’s very rocky, so it’s a good habit before sitting anywhere to move stones around to check if there are any animals.
Your expertise doesn’t change the fact that you are still in a natural environment and there will be wild life around you.
