🍷 Tuscany Wine Regions Guide – Episode 3: Discover Bolgheri DOC
Welcome to the next episode of our Tuscany Wine Regions Guide. This time, we venture to Bolgheri, on Tuscany’s stunning western coast, a region celebrated for its Bolgheri DOC wines and renowned Super Tuscans. If you’re eager to explore Bolgheri’s world-class reds and white varietals with local expertise, you’re in the right place.
🌊 Bolgheri: Where Tuscan Hills Meet the Sea
Bolgheri emerged from reclaimed Maremma swampland in the late 20th century and quickly became a symbol of modern Tuscan winemaking. It gained official DOC status in 1994, and inspired iconic Super Tuscans like Sassicaia and Ornellaia (Wikipedia).
Today, the Bolgheri DOC encompasses around 65 producers across coastal vineyards near Castagneto Carducci approximately 80 km from Florence.
🍇 The Wines of Bolgheri: DOC, Rosso, and Superiore
Bolgheri Rosso DOC
These reds are characteristically Bordeaux-style blends, made from:
- Cabernet Sauvignon (10–80%)
- Merlot (up to 80%)
- Cabernet Franc (up to 100%)
- Syrah (up to 50%)
- Sangiovese (up to 50%)
Other local varieties may contribute up to 30% (Bolgheri DOC, Wikipedia, Bolgheri DOC).
Minimum alcohol: 11.5%
Aging: Rosso must age at least 10 months, with release from September 1st of the year following harvest .
Bolgheri Superiore DOC
For a Superiore label:
- Yield: ≤ 8 t/ha in single-variety vineyards
- Alcohol: ≥ 12.5%
- Aging: Minimum 2 years, with at least 1 year in oak barrels; released from January 1st of the 3rd year after harvest .
Bolgheri also allows white wines (Vermentino, Sauvignon, or blends) and rosé, with specific varietal compositions of up to 70% primary and 30% local grapes (Wikipedia).
🍷 Tasting Notes & Style
Bolgheri reds are typically:
- Deep ruby colour, often evolving to garnet
- Aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, Mediterranean underbrush, and spice
- A palate that’s full-bodied, structured, with balanced acidity and elegant tannins
Superiore versions offer greater depth and aging potential (5+ years), while regular Rosso is approachable earlier and ideal pairing with hearty Tuscan cuisine.
🔍 Bolgheri vs. Traditional Tuscan Reds
Unlike Chianti or Brunello, Bolgheri focuses on Bordeaux-style varieties—giving boldness, concentration, and international appeal.
